Alfredo Cristiani was president of El Salvador from 1989 through 1994. Originally a businessman, he rose through the right-wing Nationalist Republican Alliance (ARENA) party in the 1980s. During his administration, the government participated in the Chapultepec Peace Accords that ended the 12 year long Salvadoran Civil War with the leftist guerrilla group Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN). Cristiani is known as a champion of neoliberal economic policies. Cristiani was interviewed by Professors William Ascher, Jonathan Hartlyn and Scott Morgenstern on May 18, 1998.
